The Punjab government of India has recently ordered the ban on glyphosate herbicides for sale in the region. This type of herbicide is currently used in the control of many weeds in almost all crops, and the product is effective.
KS Pannu, secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture of Punjab, said, “The Central Pesticides and Registration Board (CIB&RC) recommended that the herbicide be used only in tea gardens and non-crop planting areas. Although there are no tea gardens in Punjab, crop density is extremely high and there are very few non-crop planting areas. This small area is associated with crop cultivation through rivers, and some areas are between row crops, orchids and rivers/drainage roads. These areas are also part of the farmland."
The Punjab Farmers’ Committee had previously recommended a ban on glyphosate sales in Punjab.
An official government spokesman said: "Glyphosate is considered to be carcinogenic. In addition, Chandigarh, an expert at the Indian Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), believes that the chemical can cause other health problems and has the potential to damage human DNA. Sex."
There are many products containing glyphosate on the market. Pannu added: “The Punjab government has begun to regulate all pesticide producers and distributors in the region, prohibiting them from selling glyphosate products. It also requires licensing agencies to cancel the legal provisions for the approval of glyphosate sales licenses.”
It is reported that Punjab's agricultural land only accounts for 1.54% of India's land area, but it supplies 50% of India's grain (wheat and rice). Source: AgroPages (World Agrochemical Network)
